Welcome to Squirrels.
I hope your Easter break was restful, relaxing and that we are ready to go for our summer term! Our next Topic will explore the question ‘Is Change Always Better?’ which will lead us to look right back in time to the Stone Age, leading to the Iron Age. We will gain knowledge of what life was like during this time and the vast changes that happened in Britain: from the tool they created; the change from nomadic life to settlers; how they managed to survive. We have some fabulous artefacts and books that we can explore, along with some interesting activities such as cave painting in the dark, creating our own Stone Age dress and recreating Stonehenge. We will also be developing our scientific knowledge of materials and their effects on light/shadow. In English, we will shifting our focus to Non-fiction. We will start by looking at the purpose of different non-fiction texts before using ‘Skara Brae’ by Dawn Finch to kick-start our writing journey. We endeavour to create our own persuasive adverts by the end of term using some new features and non-fiction shapes alongside our usual writing ‘lenses’. This will expand our reading and writing skills; broadening our vocabulary and comprehension. Part of our week will focus on reading activities and reading for pleasure. Children all have a reading book and diary. Please try and read with your child at least 4 times a week. There are class prizes on offer for those that consistently read at home. Spellings will be handed out on a Friday and tested the following Friday. Our Mathematics learning will continue to look at fractions and decimals and how we can really master these. We will build on our place value work and operation work that we have already covered and see how all this learning can be used with fractions and decimals too. We will build heavily on fluency and arithmetic in these areas. We will begin to delve even deeper into our mathematical understanding by solving problems and using our reasoning skills. Times table practise is imperative this year. We will continually do lots of work with this in school but additional practise at home is expected. All children have access to TTRockstars to help with this. PE will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays, with our Friday session being swimming. Please make sure children come to school in the correct kit on these days – Back bottoms, a white top and their school jumper/cardi. For swimming days children must bring their swimming kit and towel along with their swimming hat. Hair needs to be tied up and earrings removed. Keep checking our page to see photos of all the fun we will be having with our learning back at school!
